256 TEAMS WC

The complete field

Why there are 256 teams

The field is intentionally larger than official international football. Here is how the number creates the format, why guest sides are included and how their status is presented.

A bracket built around a power of two

A straight knockout works most cleanly when the number of entrants can be divided evenly until one remains. With 256 teams, every country starts in the same round, every round halves the field and no team receives a bye. The path is easy to understand even when the bracket itself is enormous.

The sequence is 256, 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1. That gives the project its identity and gives the eventual champion an eight-match campaign.

211 FIFA members

The foundation of the default field is the 211 national associations that are members of FIFA. Including the full membership means the tournament is not limited to countries that usually reach a World Cup finals. Smaller associations begin on the same bracket screen as established champions.

Membership does not imply equal team strength. The simulation profiles aim to preserve meaningful differences while still allowing a rare knockout upset. The site is independent and does not claim that FIFA created or endorsed this tournament.

45 guest sides

FIFA membership alone leaves 45 places before the field reaches 256. Those places are filled by invited islands, territories, micronations and representative sides. They are included for the fictional tournament experience and are labelled as guests rather than being presented as FIFA members.

The guest category lets the simulator represent football communities that sit outside the standard membership list, while keeping the arithmetic of the bracket intact. Inclusion is not a statement about sovereignty, official recognition, eligibility or the legal status of a territory.

How teams are represented

Each participant has a display name, code, flag or fallback mark and a simulation profile. Flags help visitors scan the field, but they are identifiers in an entertainment interface rather than political claims. Where a remote image is unavailable, the site can fall back to an emoji or neutral mark.

Prominent national teams have more detailed curated player pools. The wider field may rely on generated names for match events so that every country receives a readable simulation. The distinction is explained in the methodology.

Finding a country

The homepage participant browser lists the complete field and includes search. You can inspect the entrants before starting, then choose a country to manage or remain neutral. Custom tournament mode lets you build a smaller field when you do not want the full 256-team journey.
